My 3 Favourite Breathwork Styles to Get You Through the Festive Season

The festive season can be so exciting, but let’s be real – it can also be overwhelming.

With everything that comes with family gatherings, work events, gift shopping, and the pressure of “holiday perfection,” it's easy to feel like your nervous system is constantly in overdrive.

That’s why I’ve been turning to breathwork lately. It’s one of the quickest ways I know to stay calm, clear, and centred during the chaos. If you’re feeling the festive pressure, I want to share my three favourite breathwork techniques with you. These have been total game-changers for me, and I’m confident they can help you too.

1. Box Breathing

This one is my go-to when I’m feeling stressed or overwhelmed. Box breathing helps me slow down, take control of my breath, and calm my nervous system.

It’s simple but powerful:

  • Inhale for 4 counts

  • Hold for 4 counts

  • Exhale for 4 counts

  • Hold for 4 counts

Repeat this for a few minutes and feel your anxiety start to melt away. Box breathing is perfect for when you’re in a busy moment—like right before a family gathering or when you need to hit reset in a crowded room.

2. Straw Breath

Straw breathing is a fantastic way to deepen your breath and quickly activate your relaxation response. I love using this technique when I need to release tension or feel a bit frazzled.

Here's how it works:

  • Inhale deeply through your nose, filling your lungs fully

  • Exhale slowly and steadily through your mouth as though blowing air through a straw

This extended exhale naturally helps your nervous system relax. It’s a great go-to when you need to centre yourself and find calm in a busy or overwhelming situation. Try it during moments when you're feeling rushed or tense, like before a big event or meeting.

3. Mantra Breathing (Inhale/Exhale)

If you find that your mind is racing and it’s hard to focus, mantra breathing can really help anchor you. You can pair the breath with a simple phrase to guide your practice and bring you back to the present moment.

Try this:

  • Inhale deeply while silently saying "I receive"

  • Exhale completely while silently saying "I release"

Give one of these a go a let me know if it resonated with you.

Let's give staying grounded and centred a go this festive season; what do you reckon?
